Choosing a label for yourself is different than being labeled by society. I agree with James below there. For now, labels are useful. But they don't have to be mandatory if there is no need or use for them.

The ancient Greeks were notorious for their varied sexual practices, yet they didn't use labels because they considered sex an act, not an identity. Relationship too is, I believe, a choice and not an identity.
