I’m Calling BS on Yoda
Yes, you little imaginary guru — trying is just as valid as doing.
In our culture today, who doesn’t secretly want to be a Jedi? My parents took me to the theater for the grand opening of the very first Star Wars movie back in 1976. I was only a few months old, so I don’t really remember much from that screening. But Star Wars permeated my childhood in so many subtle ways.
And the Jedi were just so cool!
Magical powers, mind control, a brotherhood of ascetic warriorship…
There just something so tidy and comforting about transcending human frailty. Especially in the face of chaos we see all around us these days.
I know not everyone aspires to be a Jedi master, or to swing one of their legendary swords. But I sure wanted to be one growing up.
However over time, I’ve discovered the substantial flaw in the famous words of the little green master. If you’ve been living under a rock for the last 46 years, this is the quote to which I refer -
“Do, or Do Not. There is no try.”
Today, I’m calling BS on Yoda.
For how are we supposed to learn any new things, or do our best to evolve our world, if trying is not a thing?
