It’s all so complicated, Roz. I mean, in theory I agree with you. Absolutely.
And this morning? I was down at the dam on Canyon Lake here in TX. Quietly eating my breakfast and savoring EVERY single moment of my 4 day solo writing retreat. 🤘🏼
When this group of people started gathering at the nearby picnic table. I thought they were there for a kids birthday. They start blowing up pink and blue balloons. Then I notice the balloons have “Celebrate Life” on them.
I see some folks start crying. Then I see a guy show up with a fancy camera. Then the whole group walks down the path to enter the walkway over the dam.
I realize it must be a pro-life thing, and I’m trying to tolerantly tell myself that they must really love babies a lot - trying to be ok with their position.
I think maybe they’re going to walk up and down the dam with their balloons to honor their cause.
Is that what they do?
Nope.
They walk about 15 feet out into the walkway, then all turn and on the count of 3, they release their balloons into the air.
Over my beloved Texas Hill Country. Over Mother Nature.
They basically spooge a bunch of plastic garbage all over the ground, and call that love.
I can’t lie. I was very very angry.
We live in a system where religion has fully intersected with peak patriarchy and stupid action abounds!
I don’t want to disagree with this kind of nonsense! I want to change the system!
To my credit, I did not charge the group yelling at their stupid choice to litter in the name of love. That would be an awesome spoof song title though…
No, I contained myself and let my anger burn like a blue hot flame to speak my truth as LOUDLY as possible into the world. And to do my part in course correcting a dangerously treacherous path.
So yeah - when it stops being total destruction of life worthy, sure. Let people be and agree to disagree. But in this moment, it sure feels important to keep trying.
Now my thumbs are tired. This was a great post. Very provocative! Thanks.
