One of my favorite features on some social sites is the ability to record your name, so others can hear how you say it. It makes sense to do your best to learn how to call someone the way they want to be called. It’s simple respect.
Not bothering to take the time to learn a name you may not know how to pronounce is just kinda rude.
I don’t necessarily think it’s a white American people thing. I’m of Nordic background with a Norwegian name - Kaia - and people mispronounce it often. The difference is, I look white - and so most people take the time to learn how to say it. That’s called having privilege.
That said there are plenty of people who call me Kia, or Kayra, or K-ah. They must not have studied diphthongs.
Just wanted to end with this. You deserve to have your name pronounced correctly. And you deserve to have people care if they’re getting it right. But maybe it’s not a personal thing or a privilege thing if they don’t. Maybe you just need to be willing to show the ones who care - how to do it. And forgive the ones who can’t, or don’t. Just my opinion.
