Sitting With the Dark & the Void of the Winter Solstice
It’s NOT just about the eventual return of the light. It’s actually about the darkness itself.
On the longest, darkest day of the year for the northern hemisphere — we are reminded so often on the solstice, that we are headed back towards the return of the light.
But this simplistic cleaving to light as good, and darkness as something scary or bad we must learn to endure — kind of misses the point.
When is Darkness Going to Get Some Respect?
Where is the love for the void of unknowing that comes as the temperature drops, and the molecules of matter move towards more stillness?
Why do we fear the dark, and cling to the light — when both parts of this equation are part of the holy divinity of the life force moving through the denser materials of the immanent world?
It seems that we never quite grow out of the fear of the dark we may have had as children. As adults, we simply find legitimate ways to avoid the darkness.
Many of us are experts at escaping the dark void. We fill our days with activities, errands, work, things to do, stuff to buy.
