So are you saying that basically the problem is the gendered social conditioning that big jobs are more important to men than home life balance? That men get to determine if they want to change things and women just have to suck it up and plead for change?
I’m not arguing with your educated assessment of the issue here. I appreciate the dialogue.
But when are we going to realize that instead of preserving the old economic system at the cost of compounding misery, we could just build a new system? It’s not like the old one is working or anything.
It’s no wonder that women have gotten fed up, sought more education, and are working to improve their ability to work in the world instead of passively accepting that old wheeze that they should be “working in the home.”
If men don’t want to “have to work in the home” then… why should women? Why can’t parents just both be parents? Why are there assumptions made about what people have to do based on their gender?
If children are important to our future, why have we made this social agreement to trap men at work and value them for their ability to provide while at the same time we trap women at home and value them for their ability to care? This isn’t ideal for anyone.
It’s a dumb system. And we inherited it.
It’s time for change. Specifically because the current system is literally so depressing.
