The Unexpected Perks of a Messy House

My house is now much messier than it used to be.

I turned in a formal resignation to what I used to think was my personal and obligatory side-hustle.

I no longer work as the damn house elf.

It feels wonderful.

I never wanted the fucking job anyway.

My family was confused, but they’re getting the hang of it now.

There are often clothes strewn over the floor in my kid's room. There are toys and puzzles stacked in front of the books on the shelf. And there are definitely crumbs on the floor under the breakfast bar.

I may have compromised my habit of cooking hot breakfast for the family most mornings, but hey. I cook dinner pretty often. The kids are old enough now to get themselves something to eat.

Sure, there are 3 giant IKEA bags of clean laundry waiting to be put away. They’ve been sitting there for 3 days now. What’s the worst that could happen? The load needs to be run again because it got fusty? Someone doesn’t have their favorite socks?

There might be a few dirty dishes in the sink. And maybe I haven’t vacuumed yet this week. The floorboards definitely need a…
