This is why 12 years ago, we founded a hippie commune. 1.5 acres in the city limits with shared living for 9-10 folks. It’s the only way we knew to afford the cost of having kids and doing the work to grow food.
Admittedly, we started by having 1.5 acres of land to work with, so it took both privilege and foresight for us to have the opportunity to do what we’re doing right now. And not many people have such a good starting place!
We’re starting to need each other again.
It’s going to change even more as the cracks get wider and start to swallow more folks up. I think this is why the homestead movement is so attractive in this moment. Thought it’s far from a panacea.
