Vanessa what if we took this effort by Mattel, combined our own efforts & used these dolls as tools for our own purposes?
What if we could spark ALL our kids imaginations, and get them interested in famous women (& you’re right it should be famous people) with these dolls?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t disagree that women should not be represented as merely dolls on a shelf.
You are 100% correct.
But if we put our energy and love into the topic, and our kids happen to love dolls, we could turn this into something better.
We could use it as a starting point. The doll might lead to the easel and the paint. It might lead to the book and lessons on astronomy and science. It might open the door.
The thing is, corporations are not going to walk us through that door into the new world.
Instead we can choose take the positive shifts they’re attempting to make, and work with them to change the game.
Culture change is a relay race, not a solo ultramarathon.
Part of the responsibility lies within our aegis. We have to work together to make this new story take hold. It’s not something that will just be handed to us ready made.
Thoughts?
I love your work btw. Your uppity is well-founded, intelligent, and well written. Keep bringing it mama!
