While it’s fascinating to see plant medicines doing business in traditional retail spaces, and using luxe branding and social justice intentionality to reposition the sale of cannabis, it’s still capitalism.
We’re still subverting a plant that grows in the ground into a high-end shopping experience. And we’re still taking something that traditional cultures grew and packing it in boxes, jars, tins, and bags. 🛍️
A real subversion of the cannabis industry could be something like a community garden, where people come to learn the art and science of nurturing the plant, and learning how to tend and grow it themselves.
As Michael Pollan famously asked in his book, The Botany of Desire, do we cultivate the plant? Or in the end, does it cultivate us?
